Knitted Fabric

Stretch fabrics/knits are produced on knitting machines rather than the weaving machines that produce damask fabric. This alternative method of construction gives the fabric a stretch characteristic, making it ideal for washable covers etc. Composition of the knit fabric can include many different yarns from polyester to cotton, while viscose and special yarns like bamboo and tencel can add their own additional characteristics.

Typically a knit is made up of a front surface, a filling thread, where the design can sit, and a backing which can give a knit its characteristic dotted background effect.
